Individual Coaching

The Boston Running Center focuses on individual coaching for runners of all levels.  Weekly customized programs, and constant contact with an elite running coach, are what sets our service apart from any other in the country.  Your over-all health, happiness with the sport of running, and achieving your full-potential are our primary goals for each and every client.

The following levels of contact with your coach are available.

A free initial consultation with the head coach is required for anyone considering training under the Boston Running Center.  This is simply to help both parties have an understanding of how the training will proceed before a commitment is made.

Personal Coaching

After the initial consultation, members begin to receive weekly customized workouts that are designed to help achieve their performance goals and that are catered to their individual circumstances.

Upon completing their week's workout regimen, members begin logging their workouts in their personal Log Book that has been specifically designed for members of the Boston Running Center. These entries are then reviewed by the Head Coach on a weekly basis to more effectively design the workouts for the following week. The Log Book is complete with pace charts, mileage charts, and a comprehensive list of New England races.

Personalized tips and guidance are given by the coach through each runners's privately accessed on-line Notebook.

Through the Notebook and the Log Book, a continual and personalized dialogue is established to better serve the runner at an individual level. Unlimited email and two phone calls per week are also provided to help customize  training regimens (24 hour response time is guaranteed).

The week prior to the goal race of each runner the coach will also provide a race strategy discussion either in-person at the center or by phone.

One-on-one Coaching Sessions

Personal access to a professional running coach who is fully involved in the design and implementation of an individual's workouts is often a luxury available only to elite athletes. The Boston Running Center, however, offers runners the opportunity to receive in-person instruction and guidance from a USA Track and Field certified coach.

Runners can expect to:

  • Improve their running form and stride.
  • Benefit from additional strength, balance, and flexibility training.
  • More closely reach their full potential by having an experienced coach design and supervise their workouts.

Time and location of each session is scheduled with the highest priority being the convenience and consistency of training for each runner. Designated sites may include indoor or outdoor tracks, running trails, or other venues depending on the nature of the workout.

In-person sessions allow the running coach to make observations that are unique to each runner. This can greatly improve the quality of the weekly prescribed workouts. To more fully benefit from Personal Coaching it is highly recommended that runners meet with the coach at least once during their initial season.

Partner training with the coach is available for those who like to workout with a friend or partner. Runners are asked to confer training times and location with their training partner and the coach prior to registering.

Program Review Sessions

These 45 minute phone call conversations with your coach are available for those looking to have a deeper understanding of:

  • how your weekly workouts are designed
  • the strengths/weaknesses that are being targeted in your program
  • exercise science principles involved in your program and how these contribute to your weekly running schedule

From these conversations runners will also learn more about the observations your coach is making and how these are guiding your running regimen.  This feedback then gives the runner the tools necessary to:

  • better design his/her own program
  • better communicate with his/her coach
  • make sound judgements with regards to mid-week training adjustments, cross-training activities, and both short and long term goals
